Through year’s end, a local nonprofit organization called WitKids is working to collect 2,011 books to donate to children in San Diego, New Orleans and Kenya.

The organization, founded by teacher Sarah Hernholm, has partnered with Warwick’s Bookstorein La Jolla so that books can be dropped off at its location on 7812 Girard Ave. through New Year’s Eve. The bookstore is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Donors are able to say which school should benefit from their books. They are being asked to write an A inside the front cover of books meant for the Center for Community Solutions, which has three locations in San Diego County; a B for the William J. Fischer Accelerated Academy in New Orleans, and a C for The Daraja Academy in Kenya. Books can be from elementary to high school reading levels.

WitKids has so far collected more than 800 books, well short of a goal organizers knew was lofty, intern Tiffany Barroga.

“We put out that number to have a high goal,” she said.

Warwick’s is giving 15 percent discounts to anyone who purchases books in the store for donation. Book pickups can also be arranged by sending emails to info@witkids.org.

The books will be sorted in January to ensure each one is headed where donors requested.
