Book Drive! (La Jolla Light)
Warwick’s a drop off point for WitKids books drive
WitKids, a non-profit that believes in empowering kids to do “Whatever It Takes!” to make a difference through service learning projects, is collecting books this month that will be donated to one of several causes, according to Tiffany Barroga, an intern with the program.
The effort continues through Friday, with a goal of collecting 2,011 books by 2011.
Volunteers can drop their books off at Warwick’s and in return receive a discount on their purchases for donation. They will also receive a raffle ticket for one of four free books from Warwick’s. If they choose to purchase a book from Warwick’s to donate, the store is offering 15 percent off any books for donation, she wrote in an email.
Each month WitKids members are in charge of a community service project and get to make the choices and make a difference.
“This month’s fan-chosen WitProject is called the ‘Wit-astical Book Drive.’” TIffany wrote. “The people that donate can choose if they want their book(s) to go to the Center for Community Solutions here in San Diego, William J. Fisher Accelerated Academy, one of our schools in New Orleans still rebuilding after Katrina, or the Daraja Academy, the only secondary girls’ school in Kenya.”

Warwick’s, WitKids collecting books for children
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2010 AT 10:57 A.M.
Through year’s end, a local nonprofit organization called WitKids is working to collect 2,011 books to donate to children in San Diego, New Orleans and Kenya.
The organization, founded by teacher Sarah Hernholm, has partnered with Warwick’s Bookstorein La Jolla so that books can be dropped off at its location on 7812 Girard Ave. through New Year’s Eve. The bookstore is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
Donors are able to say which school should benefit from their books. They are being asked to write an A inside the front cover of books meant for the Center for Community Solutions, which has three locations in San Diego County; a B for the William J. Fischer Accelerated Academy in New Orleans, and a C for The Daraja Academy in Kenya. Books can be from elementary to high school reading levels.
WitKids has so far collected more than 800 books, well short of a goal organizers knew was lofty, intern Tiffany Barroga.
“We put out that number to have a high goal,” she said.
Warwick’s is giving 15 percent discounts to anyone who purchases books in the store for donation. Book pickups can also be arranged by sending emails to info@witkids.org.
The books will be sorted in January to ensure each one is headed where donors requested.

Check out footage of Dylan’s WitProject trip to New Orleans!
_______________
August 20
WitKid Dylan S. from St. Louis, MO is in New Orleans this week carrying the message of his Gulf Oil Disaster WitProject. Saddened by the destruction caused by the oil disaster, Dylan (7 years old), created a blog called “One Starts Many“. In his own words, “One person can make a big difference. One person can do anything to help others.”
Dylan received his WitKit and will be documenting his trip with a WitKids camera and video camera. He will also meet with the Mayor to find out how kids all over the country can help support the gulf restoration process. We will post Dylan’s photographs and video blogs on Facebook and this website.
Seven-Year-Old Boy Partners With WitKids
To Help With Gulf Disaster
SAN DIEGO (August 5, 2010) – Dylan Stock, a seven year-old boy from St. Louis, has teamed up with the non-profit group, WitKids, to help with the oil spill in the Gulf. Dylan is traveling to New Orleans (Aug. 8-12) to meet with city officials, business owners and fellow kids to learn more about the situation in order to find solutions to the problem.
As a first grade student, when Dylan first heard about the oil disaster he felt hopeless and upset. After doing some online research he discovered WitKids and contacted them about supporting his endeavor. WitKids is a non-profit organization that empowers children by supporting their volunteer projects. “When we first talked to Dylan about this project, we were all so impressed with his maturity and determination to fix this problem,” said WitKids founder, Sarah Hernholm. “He embodies everything that we stand for here at WitKids, and we know he’ll be successful in his effort to bring more awareness and assistance to those affected by this tragedy. We’re all about giving kids a platform to get their ideas heard, and we were more than happy to provide Dylan with a platform.”
Dylan will be documenting his trip, as he’ll be uploading content to the WitKids website (www.witkids.org). “I’m so excited to get to the Gulf. I love the ocean and all the animals,” said Dylan. “I can’t wait to talk to everyone and learn how I can help and how I can inspire kids from all over to help.” Dylan will be given a boat tour to see first-hand the problem at hand. He’ll be meeting with employees of the Aquarium to see how the rescued animals are treated. He’ll also be meeting with a couple of business owners who have been affected, and mayor Mitch Landrieu.

WitKids Press- Austin Charity Examiner
Raising a child to be a giving and caring adult in a society that seems more intent than ever on rewarding selfish behavior is no easy job for a parent. With that in mind, these three organizations are setting out to prove that kids really do want to make a difference in their community and ultimately in the world.
The banner that hanged in Sarah Hernholm’s classroom read “Whatever It Takes” as a reminder to everyone that entered that there was not anything they could not do if they put their mind to it.
